Two New Lathe Cut Records On QCS!

QCS_128 Michael Ridge “Bottle Bank” 7″ s/sided square locked groove lathe cut record 33 ⅓ RPM (edition of 12)

This already existed as a one-off edition cut for the Stretch & Burn artist residency last year at Dove Street Studios. The concept for this project is simple: the sound of glass bottles smashing inside a bottle bank unceasingly plays on a single 1.6 second locked groove. Play it for 1.6 seconds or 16 hours!!

Colour artwork is printed onto white card, an additional B&W insert is printed onto light blue paper.

Check out this short documentation video of my own copy being played:

QCS_129 Zebra Mu “Sweat Loop Road Fuck” 4.75″ s/sided square lathe cut record 33 ⅓ RPM (edition of 14)

Uneasy and drunken trash tape loop session derived from a clump of discarded tape found on the side of the road. Garbled half-speed spoken word nonsense and other unidentified noises at work.

Each lathe cut record is packaged in a clear plastic CD sleeve. Folded colour artwork is printed onto white paper with an additional B&W insert printed onto red paper

Michael Ridge “Padlock Loop” Anti Tape Loop & C18

QCS_127 Michael Ridge “Padlock Loop” Anti Tape Loop & C18 (edition of 10)

Presenting my latest tape loop / anti-cassette project!

Padlock Loop consists of a five second tape loop and C18 reel of tape mounted in an all clear screwed cassette shell. A heavy-duty padlock is fastened onto the supply reel, a key is provided: however, this is wedged inside the cassette shell making playback initially impossible. Playing the loop requires listeners to unscrew the cassette shell, remove the key then reassemble the cassette without the padlock attached. The C18 reel can either be mounted into another cassette shell or utilise the existing one with the tape loop removed.

The loop and C18 reel contain recordings sourced directly from one of the padlocks; utilising a contact microphone to capture the various metallic scraps, clicks and clunks when used.

All information is printed onto a small transparent acetate sheet. Tools required: small crosshead screwdriver, sticky tape, another cassette and a steady hand. If you do not wish to take your copy apart I can send you the tracks digitally.

Jeroen Diepenmaat & Michael Ridge “Environmental Sounds” b/card CDr

QCS_126 Jeroen Diepenmaat & Michael Ridge “Environmental Sounds” b/card CDr (edition of 20)
I’m delighted to present Environmental Sounds, the second artist and label collaboration between myself and Dutch artist Jeroen Diepenmaat. A four minute composition has been carefully composed around environmental and nature field recordings played back on scratched and modified CDr’s. The listener will encounter various glitches, skips, noise and silence mixed with our original recordings.

Each copy features unique art work/designs: information is printed onto five separate clear acetate sheets, the information will gradually wear/scratch off and degrade. A fragment of masking, brown and blue parcel tape is applied to three sheets of acetate. Hand drawn line work mimicking CD scratches is drawn onto each disc.

Norfolk Trotter “Nodule” reel-to-reel loop

QCS_124 Norfolk Trotter “Nodule” reel-to-reel loop (edition of 15)

Experimental and lo-fi Harsh Noise Wall reel-to-reel loops from my side-project Norfolk Trotter. Nodule comprises of an 8 second loop documenting two live recording sessions, both captured utilising a 1960’s Stellaphone ST470 portable open reel tape recorder. The first Wall is crafted from amplifying and distorting the vibrations generated from grinding two flint nodules together. The second is a sparser and more exploratory piece, focusing on the texture of the flint cortex with minimal distortion used.

Front cover artwork is printed in red, whilst the inside cover is printed in black onto light blue paper. Each loop is packaged in a black backed library cassette case. Upon purchase you can also be sent via WeTransfer two 19 minute recordings from my own loop being played back.

Various “Microcassette From A Greek Answering Machine” 3″CDr

QCS_120 Various “Microcassette From A Greek Answering Machine” 3″CDr (edition of 38)

The idea for this compilation came about when Manolis Pappas (Coherent States found a damaged microcassette whilst out walking in the suburbs of Agia Paraskevi (Greece). He very kindly sent me the microcassette and upon receiving it just over three minutes of lo-fi audio was discovered: frenzied messages, background music/noise and beeps from the answering machine itself!

An open call was created inviting members of the Electronic Cottage community to download the found audio and rework it anyway they liked, the original callout is detailed here: Six artists responded: Frank Audiffret, Mike Nobody, Rinus Van Alebeek, Rafael González, Dylan Houser and myself, the result is an eclectic and superb mix of experimental audio art!

Rubber-stamped CDr is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve with folded colour art work. Each copy includes three paper inserts.
