QCS_132 Michael Ridge “Misc Loops #5” C20 (edition of 20)
The fifth instalment of the Misc Loops series explores extended tape loops of lo-fi ambient music subtly incorporating field recordings of bird song, chimes, streams/rivers and the coast. A soundtrack to fading coastal memories.
Colour artwork is printed onto white paper and packaged in dark blue backed library cases. Each copy features fetching plum purple tape shells and colour labels.
QCS_127 Michael Ridge “Padlock Loop” Anti Tape Loop & C18 (edition of 10)
Presenting my latest tape loop / anti-cassette project!
Padlock Loop consists of a five second tape loop and C18 reel of tape mounted in an all clear screwed cassette shell. A heavy-duty padlock is fastened onto the supply reel, a key is provided: however, this is wedged inside the cassette shell making playback initially impossible. Playing the loop requires listeners to unscrew the cassette shell, remove the key then reassemble the cassette without the padlock attached. The C18 reel can either be mounted into another cassette shell or utilise the existing one with the tape loop removed.
The loop and C18 reel contain recordings sourced directly from one of the padlocks; utilising a contact microphone to capture the various metallic scraps, clicks and clunks when used.
All information is printed onto a small transparent acetate sheet. Tools required: small crosshead screwdriver, sticky tape, another cassette and a steady hand. If you do not wish to take your copy apart I can send you the tracks digitally.
QCS_113 Michael Ridge “Heatwave” recycled seven second tape loop (edition of 10)
A handmade seven second tape loop inspired by the recent heatwave in the UK. Side A is a rough field recording capturing dry grass and vegetation gently rustling in the hot wind stifling wind, side B is a lo-fi drone composition recorded during a level three warning. Each loop is dubbed onto used audio book tape and installed inside a recycled shell. I’ve allowed tiny fragments of the original recordings to seep into mine, consequently each copy will sound slightly different.
Stark B&W art work is printed onto speckled off-white paper, recycled audio book tapes each have a colour label mounted onto the shell.
*Please note: I’ve tested each loop out on several different cassette players and these work fine, however I can’t guarantee they will work on all!*
QCS_111 Zebra Mu “Warm Up / Trash” 3″CDr (edition of 11)
Two live semi-improvised recordings captured in February of stripped back experimental noise, sourced primarily from mic’d up broken gramophone records and my voice.
A rubber stamped 3”CDr is packaged in a slim line DVD case. Each copy features cyan and black artwork printed onto peach coloured paper, an additional insert is printed in red onto yellow paper.
QCS_DS-01 Michael Ridge “Dove Street Loops” C1 (edition of 10)
All ten cassettes were exhibited during my recent artist residency Stretch & Burn hosted by Dyad Creative at Dove Street Studios, Norwich. Each copy features unique recordings documenting numerous live experiments with extended reel-to-reel tape loops. The primary sound sources for every loop were contact microphones attached to an empty gas canister and fire escape just outside the studio space, check out the video below for a preview.
Minimal black and white artwork is printed onto clear acetate, small white stickers are affixed onto the tape shell.
Each copy features a centre label printed in red ink onto yellow paper. Cover artwork is printed in blue ink onto yellow paper. Created whilst I was artist in residence at Dove Street Studios, Norwich, UK in January 2018.
QCS_110 Michael Ridge & Jeroen Diepenmaat “Feed the Birds” s/sided lathe cut record 33⅓ RPM (edition of 9)
Feed the Birds is a collaboration between myself and the wonderful Jeroen Diepenmaat: 7” clear single sided lathe cut record meticulously covered with mixed bird seed. Allowing birds to literally feed off the record will expose the playing surface: an experimental field recording awaits the listener….
Each lathe cut is packaged in white 7” reel-to-reel tape box with B&W artwork mounted on the lid. An additional paper insert is included with the record.
QCS_100 GX Jupitter-Larsen / Zebra Mu “Split” 1″ lathe cut record 33⅓ RPM (edition of 110)
Likely to be one of the smallest lathe cut records ever released! GX and I each recorded an exclusive eight second composition for this project. Expect a spoken word piece from GX and experimental noise/drone piece from myself.
Each clear 1” lathe cut is nestled in a clear PVC coin wallet, with fold-out artwork printed in blue ink onto yellow paper. Every copy comes in a 2” x 2.8” grey drawstring velvet bag, complete with a shrunken QCS promo flyer.
**PLEASE BE AWARE** This is a handmade and extremely experimental lathe cut record, expect it to be monstrously lo-fi and VERYchallenging to play…. HAVE FUN!
AT LAST!!! It has taken over a year of planning but FINALLY I’m now accepting pre-orders for GX Jupitter-Larsen / Zebra Mu “Split” 1″ lathe cut record!!
This is the smallest lathe cut QCS will ever release, possibly one of the smallest in the world too. 110 will be made, ironically it is the most copies I’ve ever put out as well. This dinky split will feature an exclusive (and very short) track from GX and myself. Expect a spoken word piece from GX and experimental noise/drone type composition from yours truly. Each 1” will be nestled in fold-out artwork and other packaging delights….
Pre-orders are now closed.
Estimated time of release upon writing this post is about 6-7 weeks, they will be dispatched to you on the day of release.
**PLEASE BE AWARE** This is (obviously) a handmade and extremely experimental lathe cut record (33⅓ RPM), monstrously lo-fi and stupidly challenging to play…. HELL YES!!
