Two New Lathe Cut Records On QCS!

QCS_128 Michael Ridge “Bottle Bank” 7″ s/sided square locked groove lathe cut record 33 ⅓ RPM (edition of 12)

This already existed as a one-off edition cut for the Stretch & Burn artist residency last year at Dove Street Studios. The concept for this project is simple: the sound of glass bottles smashing inside a bottle bank unceasingly plays on a single 1.6 second locked groove. Play it for 1.6 seconds or 16 hours!!

Colour artwork is printed onto white card, an additional B&W insert is printed onto light blue paper.

Check out this short documentation video of my own copy being played:

Michael Ridge “Padlock Loop” Anti Tape Loop & C18

QCS_127 Michael Ridge “Padlock Loop” Anti Tape Loop & C18 (edition of 10)

Presenting my latest tape loop / anti-cassette project!

Padlock Loop consists of a five second tape loop and C18 reel of tape mounted in an all clear screwed cassette shell. A heavy-duty padlock is fastened onto the supply reel, a key is provided: however, this is wedged inside the cassette shell making playback initially impossible. Playing the loop requires listeners to unscrew the cassette shell, remove the key then reassemble the cassette without the padlock attached. The C18 reel can either be mounted into another cassette shell or utilise the existing one with the tape loop removed.

The loop and C18 reel contain recordings sourced directly from one of the padlocks; utilising a contact microphone to capture the various metallic scraps, clicks and clunks when used.

All information is printed onto a small transparent acetate sheet. Tools required: small crosshead screwdriver, sticky tape, another cassette and a steady hand. If you do not wish to take your copy apart I can send you the tracks digitally.

Michael Ridge “”Dreams In Vintage Hairy Latex” 8″ s/sided latex anti-record & b/card CDr

QCS_121 Michael Ridge “Dreams In Vintage Hairy Latex” 8″ s/sided latex anti-record 78 RPM & b/card CDr (edition of 8)

A tenderly crafted latex anti-record containing bodily fluids and generous amounts of pubic hair trapped just under the playing surface. This surely is the true sound of love. A b/card CDr accompanies each copy that documents several attempts at playback.

Each anti-record is protected in a custom made card and paper sleeve (every copy has unique art work). All copies have a different centre label sourced from recycled vintage paper record sleeves. A B&W paper insert printed onto yellow paper also accompanies each copy.

**Please be aware: this is a highly experimental record that could damage your equipment if played!**

Various “Microcassette From A Greek Answering Machine” 3″CDr

QCS_120 Various “Microcassette From A Greek Answering Machine” 3″CDr (edition of 38)

The idea for this compilation came about when Manolis Pappas (Coherent States http://www.coherentstates.com/) found a damaged microcassette whilst out walking in the suburbs of Agia Paraskevi (Greece). He very kindly sent me the microcassette and upon receiving it just over three minutes of lo-fi audio was discovered: frenzied messages, background music/noise and beeps from the answering machine itself!

An open call was created inviting members of the Electronic Cottage community to download the found audio and rework it anyway they liked, the original callout is detailed here: https://www.electroniccottage.org/michael-ridge/ec-microcassette-call-out. Six artists responded: Frank Audiffret, Mike Nobody, Rinus Van Alebeek, Rafael González, Dylan Houser and myself, the result is an eclectic and superb mix of experimental audio art!

Rubber-stamped CDr is packaged in a clear plastic sleeve with folded colour art work. Each copy includes three paper inserts.

Zebra Mu “Anti-Flex 2” Anti-Record & CDr

QCS_118 Zebra Mu “Anti Flex 2” s/sided flexi-disc anti-record 33 ⅓ RPM and CDr (edition of 7)

Follow up to the first Anti-Flex released in 2010! Relatively playable with plenty of surface noise (as you would expect) and slithers of the original contents seeping through. For added fun I recommend utilising the additional holes on the playing surface…..

Portions of the playing surface is sanded down, spray painted (gold, green and red) and hole-punched, each copy is unique. Every flexi features a colour centre label and includes a paper insert printed in magenta ink onto pink paper, these are housed in a stickered black card sleeve. An accompanying CDr documents various attempts at playing each one, this is housed in a folded colour paper sleeve.

Michael Ridge “Heatwave” Recycled Loop Cassette

QCS_113 Michael Ridge “Heatwave” recycled seven second tape loop (edition of 10)
A handmade seven second tape loop inspired by the recent heatwave in the UK. Side A is a rough field recording capturing dry grass and vegetation gently rustling in the hot wind stifling wind, side B is a lo-fi drone composition recorded during a level three warning. Each loop is dubbed onto used audio book tape and installed inside a recycled shell. I’ve allowed tiny fragments of the original recordings to seep into mine, consequently each copy will sound slightly different.

Stark B&W art work is printed onto speckled off-white paper, recycled audio book tapes each have a colour label mounted onto the shell.
*Please note: I’ve tested each loop out on several different cassette players and these work fine, however I can’t guarantee they will work on all!*
